• Pure form of sodium hydroxide looks like white solid, and available in form of pellets, flakes, granules and as a 50% saturated solution
• Has hygroscopic properties and quickly absorbs water from the air, so needed an airtight container to store
• Highly soluble in water with heat evolution
• Also dissolves in ethanol and methanol, though its lower as comparative to potassium hydroxide
• Molten sodium hydroxide is a strong base, but due to its high temperature exhibits limited applications
• Non- soluble in ether and other non-polar solvents
• Sodium hydroxide solution leaves a yellow stain on fabric and paper
